When he first set foot on this land on the 6th December, 1492, Christopher Columbus believed he had reached the Indian Coast. Hispaniola, christened The Island, would become the point of departure for all conquistador expeditions.
First black republic. The story of this island was written by successive Spanish and French settlers. The theatre of a black slave revolt in the 19th century, the western region became the first republic to be run by slaves, and was renamed Haiti.
Beaches and mass tourism. Having become the Dominican Republic, the Spanish region occupied the eastern point of the island, the new Eldorado of “all inclusive” tourism. But it is in the mountains and coastal areas to the north and south that the soul of Hispania shines, revealing an unexpected cultural and ecological heritage.
