The essence of this series lies in the personality of its chief protagonist, Alin de Pierre, the Québécois guide. But above all it is a series that deals with a particularly sensitive subject in Quebec: hunting and fishing in the wild as a way of life.
The title is a deliberate reference to the Jack London novel and alludes to all the conjured fantasies of living alone in the forests of North America, from the more joyful (freedom, communion with the elements, natural origins, inner peace …), to the darker (age old fears of the night and of the woods, wild animals, evil spirits …), whilst not forgetting the feelings of conquest so deeply intrinsic to human nature.
Alin could well be the hero of a book; he feeds on what nature has to offer, living from the sale of furs, trying to understand … In short it could lead us to believe that such a life is still possible today and is accessible to mere mortals, even though it is not.
The North American identity appears at first glance to be unostentatious; its relationship with nature and large wooded areas induces a kinship to animals. Alin de Pierre is not simply a hunter, he is an individual able to survive alone in all the seasonal climatic conditions which affect this region of the world. He is neither MacGyver nor a former Navy SEAL, just one of those men we could have met a century ago in this part of the new world.
